Lucina was born on July 26, 1889.〔 She was raised by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Courser, in Johnson, Vermont. In 1910, Lucina married Harry Broadwell, a carpenter, and moved to Barre in 1915.〔Belding, p. 9.〕 They had three children, Doris, Hildred, and Wendell.〔Bottamini, Richard, "The Bawdy House Murder", ''Central Vermont Magazine'' (Winter 1990), p. 43.〕 At the time of her murder, Lucina was described a: "() woman . . . of rather slight build, probably not weighing over 110 pounds〔7 stone 12 lbs or 50kg〕 and being about five feet, three inches tall.〔162cm〕 She was of rather dark complexion and with regular features with the exception of prominent cheekbones."〔Belding, p. 7.〕
